Nope, you're not right
You buy it, then decide you dont like it, but Anet still has your money. As there are no subscription fees, Anet still wins as they still have your money.
If this was a subcribe-to-play game then that changes As future revenue would require people to like it. But as its a one-off purchase, Anet has made their money out of you.
That's why there as so much hype around GW2. The more people they can get to buy it, the more money they make. Whether people like it is irrelevant when it comes to measuring its success. It's all about the number of key codes sold. Nothing more.

While it's true that they don't need subscription money, they do still need a certain percentage of players continuing to play the if they want to stay successful. People buying gems now and people coming back for subscriptions later are both critical to them.
But we don't have any numbers on either of those factors. We have forums and some early sales numbers. We have no good way to determine how successful the game actually is in an ongoing way, we just know that it launched well, and then a bunch of forum people started complaining.
I'll be interested to see how it goes. I'm personally still enjoying both games 7.5 years/4 months in.

Well, all I know is they aren't getting 40 bucks out of me...
And technically, you can assume the success of ANET is dependent on their popularity with the people who buy their games. E.g. as GW1 was good, people kept playing, and many moved to GW2 (most GW2 customers probably played GW1). If GW2 isn't good, people aren't going to be round to buy the expansions and maybe GW3 (thinking 10 years ahead here, methinks). So GW2 has to be good to attract future sales...etc etc.
Anyway getting back to the original discussion a bit. I'm wondering how they are going to expand GW2. Those monthly updates are probably going to cover the dragons awakening (correct me if i'm wrong, I haven't played it), so how are they going to sell stuff over the next few years?

Been playing GW2 since launch, but my time on there has really dropped off in the past month.
I just re-installed GW1 after a year of inactivity(also played GW1 since launch). My Necro was right there waiting for me, in Augury Rock, ready to farm hydras. I don't know how far this is going to go, but I am strangely very excited to get back into the original.

My guess is... people during winter break finally had the time to find out just how boring all other games are in comparison with GW, and came back.

Ahaha could be...or also the other way around: they had time to hop again into GW, and that made them wanna keep playing it. After all, you don't remember how fun a game is until you return to it, most times.

I still play daily. Hasn't changed since last August.
Currently getting Legendary Vanquisher on my Warrior, then doing it all over again on my Elementalist. I might even try playing as an Assassin for once.
Regardless, I still stand by my statement a long time ago that I will be the last person playing this game, if it comes to that.
I think it's more fun to know I'm the only person on the GW2 Guru site who wont touch the GW2 game with a 10-foot pole.

not the only one...I post there occasionally, but with their even stricter posting guidelines...I tend to only get over there a few times a year.
I will still be here for some time! (I have 2 accounts that I am working on getting titles..and still working on gwamm on my main account too).

nah, I think that doing chest running the way I am will make me the last person....to date I have done about 5200...still have another 4800...and I average about 2-3 a day...so that would take me about....4-5 YEARS to finish
vanquishing is quick--there are only about 120 areas, some can be done dang fast...so if you do one a day..thats less than 1/2 a year.
oh, and I am still working on a gwamm...at the moment he has 27 titles...still waiting to finish chest running, id-ing, kurzick (have 2mill left to go), and/or lucky/unlucky to get him over the top....
so 4-5 years vs 1/2 year X 2...hm....think I win on that one

I came back after 1 year break. Nothing is really as good as gw1 for me. Played hundreds of different games in the meantime. There is plenty of things I do not like (like having full friends list with no one on) and dead PVP but what is left is still brilliant. Glad to see there is still some life around.

Well I've come back after an amazing 6 years, so this is more the testimony of a new player rather than a returning one. I started right around launch but at the time I only had a dialup connection to the internet so any gaming was painful. Not the case anymore
I wanted to try GW2, but reading reviews I saw time and time again that it wasn't a true sequel to the game that I loved, and so I decided to build on what (little) I had accumulated in GW1 rather than start over.
I didn't even finish Prophicies (I was in the ring of fire on my furthest character) and I missed the other expansions, but it's great to see that this game is still kicking! The people that are left are very helpful and I've been able to make a ton of progress in the last few weeks. I joined this forum to help further speed the process and learn more about playing the game on the elite end (vanquishing, Zaishen missions and whatnot)

Well, it seems to me that from what I read so far here that we have a very viable community thats just as obsessive as ever. Meaning there are many of us still playing and still having fun doing the things we enjoy, whether it's missions, arenas, all out going after titles and so on. I find that even playing on my characters how I built a relationship with them and at the present I have a Ranger/Necro, Elem/Mesmer, Necro/Monk, and a Mesmer/Ranger, and a lazy bum of a hero Ogden LOL!!! Anyway, heheheh poor Ogden, anyway, our community at large is not dying, it's not going away tomorrow or anytime soon, but as stated already unless Anet decides to return and begin to work on updated GW as a whole then yes we do have concerns that needs addressing, we shall see.

I'm not criticising your decision to not buy things from the GW in-game store. I'm just perplexed by this belief that GW is going to shut down any second now. Some people seem to be a little too obsessed by things dying.

You obviously don't recall games like Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa and the more recently City of Heroes? ALL games NC SHUT DOWN out of the blue.
Just because you still play GW1 doesn't mean it's being prosperous to NCsoft. Just because a "handful" of players still play GW1 doesn't mean it's still prosperous. Just like Tabula Rasa and Auto Duel when it gets to that point those did it's GONE!
GW1 by all standards is a "dead" game anymore. Sure there's a handful of players in Kamadan but only ONE server when there used to be 5 or more. Outposts are empty all over the game world. There's nobody to group up with anymore save the very endgame zones. Go stand in the High Hold Keep zone and see how long it takes you to get a GROUP up to tackle it.
Even the once popular pvp zones like Fort Aspenwood or Jade Quarry are pitifully barren. The RA pvp zone is practically empty anymore.
Everything that made the game seem alive and hopping are now just visions of the past and the occassional ghost will come along for nostalgia purposes.
I wouldn't doubt NC has lost 52% stock value, GW2 is a horrible extended creation of GW1. It's empty and cold before it even begins. They need to add heroes and henchies to it fast.
